Prison Sentences Send Strong Message on Construction Site Crime

Two offenders have recently been sentenced to prison for crimes targeting residential building sites—highlighting the importance of reporting, thorough investigation, and appropriate consequences.

In one matter, an adult male was sentenced to 1 year and 4 months’ imprisonment for laundering stolen property, after 10 hot water systems, stolen from sites in Helena Valley, were recovered in May 2024. The successful prosecution followed a detailed investigation by Midland District Detectives, with critical support from PACT Site Security, including the use of GPS tracking devices deployed on PACT members building sites.

In a separate case, another male offender received an 8-month prison sentence after being convicted of burglary on a PACT member’s site in Wellard. The offender was identified through forensic evidence, leading to the successful conviction.

These outcomes are significant. They demonstrate that when evidence is gathered, incidents are reported, and industry collaborates with police, offenders can and will be brought to justice.

Too often, both the building industry and the broader community express frustration at what is seen as lenient responses to serious offences. Builders, site supervisors, and tradespeople experience firsthand the impacts of construction site theft, through delays, increased costs, and disrupted timelines, while often seeing little accountability.

These recent sentences help restore faith in the justice system and serve as a strong deterrent to others who may be considering targeting construction sites.

PACT continues to work closely with its members and WA Police to investigate offences, recover stolen property, and ensure those responsible are held accountable. These convictions send a clear message: construction site theft will not be tolerated.

If you see or suspect theft, report it. Every report strengthens our collective response and leads to outcomes like these.
