July 2021 Building and Construction Industry Statistics

A total of 27 incidents of burglary, theft and damage were reported to Police in June. A 15% decrease in reports from June and the 2020/21 monthly average.

5 x burglaries, 20 x stealing, and 2 x damage incidents were reported by PACT Members, with an additional 6x illegal rubbish dumping reports. Of the 33 reports, two related to Land Developers and the remainder from metro residential builders.

82% of crime was reported in the southern suburbs, with Hammond Park (9) and Baldivis (7) high crime areas.

In June, identified high crime areas, Golden Bay and Madora Bay had no reports during the month after Mandurah Detectives arrested three males for burglaries in the area.

Mandurah Detectives are continuing inquiries into a burglary on a BGC Housing Group in Mandurah where the offender was disturbed by a neighbour. CCTV footage was obtained from neighbouring residents, and the offender has been identified and will be arrested. Although no reports from PACT members, discussions with Police indicate that the Lakelands area has recently been subject to numerous construction site burglaries. PACT investigator will continue to liaise with Detectives with GPS tracking deployed to members sites.

Cockburn Police are investigating the theft of timber in Hammond Park with CCTV footage indicating the stolen timber was taken to a building site close by.   

The theft of building materials remained relatively high in July, with 14 of the 20 reports related to the theft of cement, lintels, roof battens, roofing hardware and insulation.     

With the value of scrap copper remaining at an all-time high of $10 per kilo, we have seen a slight increase in copper theft with three reports received. Copper pipe and electrical cable were stolen from sites in Baldivis, and copper cable was stolen from a site in Dayton. Offenders also stole two sets of window frames from two separate sites in Hammond Park. New copper/scrap metal regulations commenced on December 1st, 2020 (more information HERE).
