May 2020 Building and Construction Statistics

With the ongoing COVID-19 restrictions in place during May, there has been a general reduction in reported incidents. A total of 44 reports were received, which consisted of 3 x burglaries, 4 x attempted burglaries, 24 x stealing, 8 x damage and 5 x illegal rubbish dumping. This is a 29% reduction in reports compared to the previous month and falls in line with a reduction in general community crime across the metro area, excluding domestic violence.

Six reports from land developers consisted of 4 x illegal rubbish dumping, 1 x stealing and 1 x damage. After contact with PACT Site Security, local councils removed all reported illegal rubbish dumping.

The building site crime hot spot area for the month was Nollamara, with eight reports. Offenders targeted two multi-unit sites, stealing two installed hot water units, exterior lights, reticulation and plants. Similarly, in Westminister, four reports incidents consisted of 3 reports from a multi-unit site where offenders broke into the premises removing bathroom fittings and stealing external lights.

Two burglaries in Madora Bay showed no sign of forced entry where offenders removed a boxed hot water unit, hot plate, toilet and lighting from one site and bathroom fittings from another nearby.  A multi-unit site in Waikiki also had two installed hot water units stolen.

Scrap metal theft consisted of three reports of electrical cable theft in Coolbellup, two in Thornlie and one in Cockburn Central, a single water meter was also stolen from a site in Innaloo.

Efforts to regulate the Scrap Metal Industry are continuing with a finalised Regulatory Impact Statement submitted to the Police Minister in April, more information here

The recent signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the WA Police Force, Master Builders Association, Urban Development Institute of Australia, Civil Contractor Federation and Braven Group Service (PACT Site Security) will provide a collaborative approach to the reporting and investigation of crime and illegal rubbish dumping across the building and construction industry.

Increased reporting of crime and illegal rubbish dumping will heighten the awareness of the issues faced by the building and construction industry amongst industry stakeholders, WA Police, local government, and the wider community to enable a unified approach to the issues.

PACT Site Security continues to work with WA Police to provide efficient and effective reporting systems to identify crime trends within the building and construction industry. Accurate reporting of all crime activates resources to reduce theft risk, track and recover property, as well as deter future incidents. Police liaison, GPS Tracking, CCTV, patrols and community engagement are just some of the strategies implemented.
